About Us

Barellan Beer is a non for profit, community owned project that turns premium locally grown Barellan Barley in beer. Barellan Beer is a truly unique project, utilising local ingredients with all profits going back into the town. Since launching at Barellan’s annual Working Clydesdales Festival in October 2014, the inaugural Barellan Beer, ‘Golden Grain Ale’ has been enjoyed on tap at the Commercial Hotel and Barellan & District War Memorial Club, and across the country in its packaged form. Without the budgets of our beer companies, Barellan Beer relies on the support of our community to keep the project alive. Whether it’s promoting the beer, donating grain, volunteering to work behind the bar at festivals and events, or assisting with transport and storage of our beloved beverage, our community support is just as important ingredient as our quality locally grown barley.

The Project

Instigated by hobby brewer Stuart Whytcross who after several overseas beer related adventures came back to his home town inspired with a plan to give some much needed identity to Barellan’s faceless commodity. A crowd funding campaign was launched in June 2014, which aimed to raise the $15000 necessary to get the project off the ground. With pledges coming from far and wide the project raised $37480 not including support from local businesses who donated goods and services such as transport, packaging and brewing in the 60 day campaign. Supporters pledged funds in return for a range of unique rewards, such as being on hand to brew the first batch, limited edition long necks, cases of beer and tickets to events such as recipe selection events and the official launch party. In a truly collaborative effort Barellan’s first beer was handcrafted, a 3.9% Golden Grain Ale, selling out in the first weekend.

GOLDEN GRAIN ALE

A 3.9% Golden Ale, made exclusively with locally grown premium barley. This approachable, easy drinking golden ale is lightly hopped with Centennial and Cascade to compliment the honey like malt character from our fresh locally grown commodity clean malt profile balanced with citrus/pine hop flavours and aroma at 3.9% it’s the perfect session beer.

DUSTY RED ALE

This limited edition ale was produced as a reward for the generous supporters of the Barellan Beer Project. Like Golden Grain Ale, this beer is made using the infamous Barellan barley, barrel aged which adds complex tannins and also assists with the intense red hue. Firm bitterness, and well balanced alcohol will have many of our supporters asking why this beer was only a 'Once Off'.
